What to listen for
The accompaniment starts the dance
Hear the lower bass-and-chord pulse begin before the melody. The upper line then enters after a rest with a longer dotted note and a short reply.
How to practise it
Keep the waltz accompaniment steady while the melody enters around rests.
- Establish the accompaniment quietly before the melody enters.
- Keep the upper rests audible as part of the phrase.
- Avoid making each chord louder than the melodic line.
How hard is it
A compact children's-album waltz still requires reliable dance pulse, balanced melody and accompaniment and carefully shaped phrase endings.
