Life and music
Rimsky-Korsakov grew up in Tikhvin and combined music with an early naval career. After meeting Balakirev in 1861, he joined the circle known as the Mighty Handful. An ocean voyage followed in 1862 to 1865. He became a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1871 and later taught Stravinsky.
His keyboard music gives learners a different doorway from his orchestral works. Begin by exploring the Impromptu from his four piano pieces, Op. 11, then listen to Scheherazade for the larger orchestral picture. Return to the closing Etude as another keyboard goal. This is a discovery route, not a beginner-to-advanced grading sequence.
