The short answer
Save a MusicXML (.xml, .musicxml, .mxl) or MIDI (.mid, .midi) file in Files, then import it from PlayPiano’s library. PDF, photos and audio are not supported. Check the imported score before you practise.
Start with a supported file
PlayPiano imports MusicXML (.xml, .musicxml and compressed .mxl) and MIDI (.mid and .midi). MusicXML generally preserves more written notation; the result still depends on the file’s content and export quality.
A PDF, a photograph or an audio recording is not a supported score file. If your music is in notation software, use its MusicXML export where available.
Choose your own work, a properly licensed download or a public-domain edition whose file you’re allowed to use. Don’t assume every online arrangement is free to copy.
Need a simple file to try? Download our original four-bar exercise (MusicXML). It is an original C-major scale exercise released under CC0. No account or purchase is needed.
From file to music stand
- Save your file to Files. If it is in cloud storage, download it to your iPhone or iPad so it is available.
- Open PlayPiano’s library and choose import. Use the file picker to select the MusicXML or MIDI file.
- Open the imported piece. Look through the score before practising. Check the notes, hands and tempo against the source you intended to import.
- Start in Play. Slow the music, turn on Wait for me, or take one hand at a time.
A plan for the piece
An AI practice plan can divide your imported piece into smaller passages, each with warm ups and a checkpoint. Making a new plan needs Maestro, Sign in with Apple and a connection, and you can make one new plan a day. Once saved, a plan is available offline.
The plan is a generated suggestion, not a guarantee that every musical choice fits your needs. You can still practise your score directly.
If an import doesn’t look right
- Check the actual file type. Renaming a PDF to .musicxml does not convert it.
- Try a fresh MusicXML export from the original notation application.
- Remember that MIDI describes performance events and may not carry the same notation detail as MusicXML.
- For a cloud file, confirm it has finished downloading.
Keep the original file. If the issue persists, contact support with the file type, source application and what went wrong. Share a file only if you have the right to do so.
