History

The middle movement of Clementi’s G-major Sonatina Op. 36 No. 2 is another Allegretto, but PTNA identifies its key as C major. The change of key separates this movement from the G-major opening and finale; the work was published in 1797.

What to listen for

  1. Repeated contours lead to a shorter answer

Hear the opening shape connect to its compact response within this second movement.

  2. Chordal replies move into a lower close

Chords lead toward pitched material on the lower staff. Listen to that active line during upper rests.

  3. The opening returns with recalled responses

The familiar contour is written again with related replies. Recognise the song’s shape through the continuation.

  4. Changed closing figures finish the movement

The later response changes before repeated ending gestures. Hear their relation to the earlier chordal phrase.

How to practise it

Keep the dotted pairs measured above long support.

  1. Play voice 5 alone, then add the dotted pairs without shortening its half notes.
  2. Connect the examined opening at a comfortable tempo only when its separate layers feel settled.

How hard is it

Level 4, estimated

A singing melodic line requires controlled phrase endings, balanced accompaniment and consistent articulation at a measured pace.
