Life and music
Clementi combined composing and performing with teaching, music publishing and piano manufacture. His career helped connect the instrument itself with the music people learned to play on it. His Op. 36 sonatinas were designed as a progression, making them an enduring part of piano teaching.
For a learner, these compact movements offer a way to practise shaping a complete musical argument without starting with a long sonata. Our current selection contains movements from only two sonatinas. It is a useful introduction, not a representative survey of everything Clementi wrote.
