History

K. 15b is item 2 of the London notebook: the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe lists it as a keyboard piece in C major. Mozart wrote these short ideas while the family was in London in 1764; the newer Köchel catalogue connects much of the notebook with Leopold Mozart's serious illness there. This is a notebook component, not a movement from a finished published sonata cycle.

What to listen for

  1. A rise receives a falling answer

The opening rises before a descending response. Hear their paired direction across the phrase.

  2. The phrase returns with a changed close

The opening is written again but its ending changes. Compare the response before the first repeat.

  3. Repeated gestures climb in register

The contrasting continuation repeats a short figure and develops higher answers. Follow their larger upward route.

  4. Opening-like contours return in changed voices

The familiar shape comes back in altered voicing. Hear its connection through the final repeat close.

How to practise it

Keep the quicker lower figure supportive beneath the upper texture.

  1. Coordinate upper chord entries.
  2. Keep lower motion even.
  3. Notice the third label's changed active layer.

How hard is it

Level 3, estimated

Compact keyboard phrasing calls for coordinated articulation and a clear melodic line over support.
