What to listen for

  1. The answer leaves a clear breath

The answering line turns around its dotted rhythm and ends with a rest. Keep that gap in the pulse so the quieter phrase can enter clearly.

  2. A quieter melody above moving support

The melody becomes quieter while the lower part alternates supporting notes. Keep that accompaniment light enough for the upper phrase to remain easy to follow.

  3. A flowing line changes the colour

The melody moves into a continuous shorter-note pattern with a chromatic turn. Connect the line while listening to the harmony underneath, rather than accenting every change of direction.

  4. Strong calls, soft replies

Hear how each strong repeated attack grows into a held sound, then gives way to a short soft reply. The lower moving notes keep the phrase going while the upper part changes character.

How to practise it

Keep the broad chordal opening separate from the following melodic detail.

  1. Practise the C-E-G gesture into its longer arrival without inventing a fixed bar count.
  2. Practise the two layers' matching contour and final rest slowly.
  3. Connect the stated opening gestures at a comfortable tempo, keeping their distinct releases.

How hard is it

Level 7, estimated

The upper-intermediate target values dependable passage coordination, responsive phrase contrasts and continuity across a complete Allegro con spirito component.
