What to listen for
A familiar motive changes colour
Recognise the opening motive through the development’s changing keys; compare the returning second theme in the home minor.
How to practise it
Shape the dotted melody above steady but quiet chords.
- Practise the melody without grace notes, then add them lightly.
- Practise the lower chords quietly and evenly, then add the upper phrase at a distinct volume.
- Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.
How hard is it
Driving accompaniment, rapid passagework and dramatic contrasts require precision and sustained phrase direction.
