History

The Köchel catalogue places the parent A-major sonata between 1779 and December 1783, with Salzburg and Vienna listed as its dating places. Artaria published it in 1784. This movement belongs to that larger sonata: the range is not an independently established completion date for this movement.

What to listen for

  1. An ornament leads to a broad opening

A small grace figure introduces a long upper note, supported by lower octaves. Direct the decoration toward that landing instead of giving it the weight of an extra main beat.

  2. Short figures leave space

Connected small-note figures settle into a longer note and a rest, before a similar gesture appears higher. Preserve the rests and the contrast between connected figures and detached notes.

  3. Changing note lengths lead into a descent

A longer dotted gesture gives way to flowing eighth notes. Keep the three-beat pulse clear as the surface rhythm changes and the line descends.

  4. Related gestures gain intensity

Short descending figures alternate with written rests and return with changed pitches. Keep their shape consistent as the source asks for more sound, without filling the gaps.

How to practise it

Let the grace approach lead to a broad opening gesture.

  1. Practise the main A-E gesture first, then add the grace approach lightly.
  2. Practise the lower durations and final rest before combining.
  3. Connect the stated opening gestures at a comfortable tempo, keeping their distinct releases.

How hard is it

Level 6, estimated

The intermediate proposal concerns poised pulse and differentiated character across the complete Menuetto and Trio component rather than a single repeated dance phrase.
