History

Mozart entered the C-minor sonata in his work catalogue on 14 October 1784. It is associated with Vienna and dedicated to Maria Theresia von Trattner. Artaria published the parent sonata in December 1785. This movement shares that work history; the catalogue entry is not proof that every movement was composed on that one day.

What to listen for

  1. A bold opening changes character

The opening rises with strong, detached attacks. It then leaves a gap and answers more quietly with a small ornamented gesture. Notice the contrast instead of carrying the first loud sound through the whole phrase.

  2. A short answer with space around it

The answer settles into repeated detached notes and ends with a rest. Keep the rests precise and balance the accompanying chords below the melodic line.

  3. The opening idea returns at a new pitch

The same bold rise reappears at a different pitch level and again gives way to a softer ornamented answer. Preserve the contrast while keeping the broad two-beat pulse.

  4. A related answer closes the thought

The quieter answer repeats its detached shape before resting. Let the short notes speak clearly without making each one a heavy accent.

How to practise it

Contrast the held opening note with its sharply released continuation.

  1. Practise the held C into the two shorter attacks without adding speed.
  2. Count the rest, then practise the quieter small-note entry.
  3. Connect the stated opening gestures at a comfortable tempo, keeping their distinct releases.

How hard is it

Level 8, estimated

The advanced target concerns a complete first movement with reliable coordination and differentiated dramatic contrasts, not just a forceful opening at a slow practice pace.
